Service Robot / Educational Robot / School Robot / Seoul Robot High School

Robots are no longer a presence that can only be seen in factories. They have become a presence that can be easily encountered in places closely related to our lives, such as hospitals, department stores, and schools.😎 Most robots that stay close to people are in the service robot group. The popularity of robots that make our lives more convenient and prosperous, such as serving robots, guide robots, disinfection robots, and barista robots, is increasing day by day.πŸ“ˆ

This is also clearly shown through figures. It is reported that the global service robot market size reached 35.24 billion USD (approx. 47.2984 trillion KRW) last year and is expected to grow at an average annual growth rate of 21.9% until 2027, reaching a scale of 140.94 billion USD (approx. 189.1668 trillion KRW).😲 It is an environment where technological advancement in service robots, increased demand for robot automation, and improved living standards are expected to drive the growth of the service robot market.

Now, instead of introducing just one service robot, the number of places introducing multiple types of robots at once is increasing. Last November, Seoul Robot High School, together with Marosol, succeeded in introducing a multi-AI service robot system for the first time in an educational field.πŸ‘ A total of 4 types of service robots were introduced to the school: 2 types of guide robots, 1 type of disinfection robot, and 1 type of barista robot.

Today, we are going to have an interview with the principal of Seoul Robot High School about why they introduced the robots and how they plan to utilize them in the future!🎀

Q1. Hello, Principal! Along with an introduction to Seoul Robot High School, what is the purpose of participating in the service robot utilization demonstration project?

A. Our school is a special-purpose high school that provides top-tier luxury technology-centered education, and in 2012, it was designated as a Meister High School that operates a customized curriculum directly linked to industrial demand. I decided to participate in the project because I thought that introducing real-world untact service robots and organizing various educational programs according to the school's intended purpose would be of great help in nurturing practical robot talents.

Q2. Please give a more detailed explanation of the role of each robot. First, how are the guide robots being used?

A. We introduced two types of guide robots. First, the LG CLOi GuideBot is placed on the 1st floor to help students or external visitors visiting our school for the first time by providing information on school facilities, locations, and curriculum introductions in an untact manner.

Next, Hanool Robotics' Temi is directly participating in the education of our students. Since education from mapping to content management is possible, students can increase their understanding of the autonomous driving platform by installing and operating it themselves, while it also provides information on main facilities, school rules, and quarantine rules on the 3rd floor of the main building.

Q3. What role is the disinfection robot playing?

A. Hyundai Robotics' disinfection robot is putting a lot of effort into disinfection, befitting the name of a disinfection robot. Due to the nature of a robot high school, there are difficulties in academic achievement and the progress of the teaching process during remote classes, so the disinfection solution is a great help. At designated times, the disinfection robot patrols the hallways to disinfect the air and floors, and it works hard on disinfection even after students go home, so they can attend school with peace of mind even when COVID-19 is severe.

Q4. I heard that the barista robot is operated in connection with the merit and demerit point system. Please explain in more detail.

A. The reason for introducing the barista robot is to encourage students' good deeds. We issued RFID cards to students and enabled them to receive drinks through the Doosan Robotics barista robot with credits. Through this, we are operating it to encourage students' righteous lives and provide motivation for school life. Also, they can understand the principles of operation by directly seeing the robot move. Teachers like it a lot too.

In particular, foreign VIPs are very fascinated when they visit. Recently, several officials, including the Vice Minister of Education from Southeast Asia, visited. They were very fascinated by the barista robot and left in admiration of how one barista robot plays more than three roles at once.

Q5. What is the students' reaction?

A. I want to speak about this from two aspects. For the guide robot Temi, students say it is very helpful because they can personally create content and operate it.

In addition, students feel a great deal of pride in having a cafe within the school for the barista robot. In particular, they are using it enjoyably while considering and researching the principles of operation by using a real-world coffee robot.

Q6. What is the biggest reason you proceeded with business with Marosol?

A. The selection of the company was decided through several meetings very strictly. We actually witnessed many cases where robots with low stability were recommended or where they failed to install properly.

As 'Marosol' is the largest robot automation platform in Korea, we could trust it first. I thought we could receive a lot of help in introducing the robot solution we needed. They provided professional and objective recommendations for various robots and helped us introduce a high-quality solution tailored to the site's requirements.

The integrated control system that can oversee and control robots at once was also very impressive. Furthermore, I am very satisfied that they provided a robot-linked educational curriculum to help us utilize it well in the educational field.

Q7. In what ways was the integrated control system highly useful?

A. We needed a system where we could see various robots of different brands in one place, and we were able to solve it at once with the Marosol control system. The school is very large, and robots are operating on different floors, but being able to check the location and control them from one place without having to follow robots wandering around one by one has greatly increased the management efficiency of school operation, and the response from the faculty is very good.

Q8. Are there any difficulties in management as you introduce various robots?

A. This part is also related to the selection of the company mentioned earlier. If it ended with just installing the robot, the school would face great difficulties. Regarding this, we were able to manage the robots without much difficulty because Marosol provided education on precautions for each robot after installation and personally visited to provide continuous management whenever there were issues such as mapping modifications or updates.

Also, we are operating efficiently by integratedly controlling a large number of robots through control monitoring. These points are very helpful for management.

Q9. You are the first educational institution to introduce multiple types of robots. Please tell us about your future utilization plans.

A. Seoul Robot High School is a symbolic educational institution that nurtures talents who will lead the future robot industry field. The goal is to take the lead in the untact era, present a vision for the future society, and help students with employment and higher education by linking real-world robots with educational programs to build robot experience and utilization capabilities.

Also, I want to help other educational institutions introduce robots in the future by operating multiple types of robots simultaneously and performing successful integrated control. I hope the case of Seoul Robot High School becomes a success story and contributes to laying the cornerstone for the expansion of robots.
