Q. Brian, forklifts are large and heavy compared to other robots. Is autonomous driving really possible for them?

Of course, it is. First, unmanned forklifts are divided into AGV forklifts and AMR forklifts.

AGV (Automated Guided Vehicle) forklifts move along magnetic lines installed on the floor or recognize QR codes to follow a fixed path. Since the path is pre-determined, their biggest advantage is that they can move relatively quickly. Therefore, they shine in places with many types of products and high cargo volumes.👍

AMR (Autonomous Mobile Robot) forklifts show movements that are closer to "true" autonomous driving compared to AGVs. While AGV forklifts can only move along a set path, AMR forklifts can independently search for the optimal alternative route.

This flexibility makes AMR forklifts a great choice even when processes or facility layouts change. Recently, AMR forklifts that can even ride elevators on their own are emerging, so the range of applications is widening significantly!🤗

Furthermore, beyond the AMR stage, autonomous forklifts equipped with Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms and Internet of Things (IoT) for even more flexible movement are now appearing.

Q. There are many types of unmanned forklifts. Is it true that the development of unmanned forklifts is active in Korea as well?

Yes, that’s correct. In the domestic autonomous unmanned forklift market, Hyundai Construction Equipment, Doosan Industrial Vehicle, and A-Robotics, a company specializing in logistics robots, are standing out.

 ACS is a system that controls AMR using an AMR controller.
