Perfectly Untact from Ordering to Manufacturing and Serving! Analysis of 'Storant,' the Unmanned Cafe Ideal under COVID-19
Hello everyone! It’s your mascot and forever intern, Pengbok from Marosol 🐧
Lately, our office has been buzzing with excitement for the upcoming Marosol 2.0 update. Some people might suspect I’m just playing and eating all day, but I’m here to clear up those misunderstandings! Haha.
Today, I’ve prepared a solution for Unmanned Cafe Robot Automation, which has been one of the most requested topics on Marosol! Many people are preparing to open cafes these days, and perhaps due to the impact of the pandemic, unmanned cafe solutions with an "untact" concept have become incredibly popular. 🥰

Q. Hello, Brian. The weather has gotten much warmer! How have you been?
Hello, Pengbok. We’ve all been working hard on the Marosol 2.0 update. But thanks to your "happy energy," the office has been full of good vibes.
Q. Thank you! 😄 Today, I’ve prepared something on the unmanned cafe robot automation solution that’s so popular on Marosol. What exactly is this solution?
This solution, implemented by Vision Semicon in Daejeon, achieves perfect unmanned automation from ordering to manufacturing and serving.
Last time, we looked at a chicken cooking automation case where humans still had to handle certain tasks even if the robot did the frying. This unmanned cafe case, however, is fully unmanned, allowing you to enjoy fragrant coffee without any worries even in the era of COVID-19.

Q. A perfectly unmanned cafe! Is that really possible? 😮 What kind of robots are used here?
This solution utilizes collaborative robots and autonomous mobile robots (AMR) that we’re already familiar with. The collaborative robot receives the order and makes the coffee, and the autonomous robot serves it directly to the customer.
Q. Collaborative robots were used for frying chicken last time, too—they really are versatile! Can you explain more about how the robot actually "cooks" the coffee?
First, once a customer completes their order and payment via the kiosk, the details are sent to the Smart Barista System*.
*Smart Barista System: Consists of a cup dispenser, ice maker, water purification system, beverage dispenser, and syrup dispenser.
According to the order, the collaborative robot begins making the coffee by flexibly moving its arm. It takes about 2 minutes on average, depending on the menu. It’s quite impressive because it even adds the specific syrup requested in the order!
Once the coffee is ready, the waiting serving robot approaches and receives the drink. The serving robot, which has recognized the path, then begins its autonomous journey to the customer’s table.
Q. I’ve seen autonomous serving robots in other restaurants! But what do you mean by "recognizing the path"?
To navigate autonomously, the serving robot needs a "map." There are several ways to create this. One is to create a virtual map based on a pre-learned path, but this can lead to errors over time. Another is to stick QR codes or magnetic tapes on the floor, but this isn't great for aesthetics and can be damaged by foot traffic.
In this unmanned cafe case, "Landmarkers" are installed on the ceiling. This allows the robot to quickly and accurately identify its location and direction. This method is commonly used in many other venues that utilize serving robots.
Q. I’m a bit of a "lost cause" when it comes to directions, so I wish I had a map like that! 😂 But I’m worried about the battery... will it be okay?
The robots used in this solution automatically move to their charging docks when the battery is low. This is a standard feature for most autonomous robots. Plus, you can even add sterilization and air purification functions to these robots... I’d venture to call them the most "filial" of all robots!
Q. What do I need to prepare to set up this unmanned cafe?
The total project period is 8 weeks (2 weeks for design, 4 weeks for manufacturing, and 2 weeks for installation/test runs). However, depending on robot inventory, manufacturing could take an additional two months. In terms of space, you need at least 50m² to provide enough room for the Smart Barista System and for the serving robots to move around comfortably.
Q. A spacious and clean environment would really highlight the strengths of an unmanned cafe. Is there anything the owner actually has to do?
The owner (manager) only needs to step in once a day! At a set time, they handle the hygiene management of the equipment and restock any missing ingredients.
Q. I want to be that cafe owner! 😎 For potential owners like me, what are the main advantages of Storant?
First, you can be a very relaxed owner! Since the robot handles the entire process organically, 24-hour operation is possible. Serving takes only about 3 minutes in total, fitting perfectly with Korea's "fast-paced" culture.
But the most important thing in F&B is the taste. This solution uses top-tier blended beans to stay competitive. You can offer over 50 different menu items and freely customize recipes. Since there are no labor costs, you can offer high quality at a competitive, cost-effective price.
Q. I heard there are other various robot cafe solutions on Marosol besides this one. Could you briefly introduce them?
First, the [Smart Brewing Coffee using Rainbow RB-5] allows for grinding, brewing, and cleaning all in a compact space, boasting high space efficiency.
Then there’s the [Alibaba 24H Unmanned Robot Cafe], which uses two Hyundai HH7 units to provide delicious drinks 24/7. It’s perfect even for small footprints!
Finally, the [Latte Art Robot using Yaskawa GP8] is a booth-type server that provides various menus including hot and cold drinks, and even includes latte art and cleaning functions. The estimated price is quite affordable at around 50 million KRW, and rentals are available, so we get many inquiries for this one.
🐧: There’s a lot of demand and supply for unmanned cafe solutions. Thank you for the answers today! I actually prefer orange juice over coffee, but since a robot made it, I’m curious to try it! 🧑: Sounds good. I’ll buy the coffee today!
