Sometimes I think, "I should definitely take this out next time I go to the restroom," but then I forget immediately. 😢

Q. This is the famous(?) trash can robot 'Laty.' Brian, could you please give us a brief introduction!

The autonomous trash can robot Laty is a sensible service robot that can be placed in crowded spaces like exhibitions or hospitals to spark interest and improve the cleanliness of the area. 🙂

Q. A moving trash can robot! I really want one. I see there's a display mounted on the front as well...

That's right. In addition to its role as a trash can, it can deliver various events and promotional content to customers through the display mounted on the front.

Q. I see. But since it's autonomous, do we need to set up separate markers or facilities?

In the case of this robot, there's no need to build separate facilities. Mapping and trial runs can be completed in just one day. So, it's perfect for those worried about how to make their booth stand out at an upcoming exhibition. 😉

Q. We should have brought it to RoboWorld 2021 where the Marosol team participated. 😎 But even if it's a smart autonomous robot, is it okay to leave it alone(?) in a space where many people move around?

Just like the old saying that things grow well if you just leave them be, the same goes for Laty.

If Laty determines that a person or an obstacle is blocking its path, it can stop, wait a moment, and then navigate around it. Also, with a top speed of only 1.35 m/s, there's no need to worry.

Q. Hmm... 🤔 Then what happens when the trash can is full? Does a human have to keep checking it periodically?

Oh no. Robots are meant to make work easier for humans. There's no need for constant manual checks; when the bin is full, Laty displays a notification and moves to the disposal location on its own. The same goes for charging. When the battery is low, Laty moves to the charging station to charge itself. A 4-hour charge provides a total of 8 hours of use.

Q. Then, acting as the developer of this robot, could you introduce what you'd consider its biggest advantage?

The biggest advantage I'd pick is that it's composed of 'modular parts.' This might sound a bit difficult, but simply put, you can swap out parts depending on the purpose to use it in various ways. For example, Laty is currently working hard as a moving trash can, but by swapping parts, it can transform into a delivery robot or a disinfection robot!

Q. Oh, then there's no reason to hesitate! So, what is the estimated cost of introducing Laty?

The estimated cost is about 130 million KRW. HOWEVER! An all-in-one rental program is available! By using the rental program, you can rent Laty for around 1 million KRW per month. The reduced initial investment cost is a bonus.

Furthermore, service management and response through the control and remote center are very robust if any problems occur. There's zero need to worry as the assigned SI company performs regular maintenance and service. 😎
