Playful Dementia Prevention Classes with a Cute Robot

Hello everyone. I’m still at a young and promising age, but these days, it feels like even when I go to an elementary school, there are no children, and I see more and more elderly people.

As a result, many senior welfare centers—where elderly people can visit much like a daycare center—have been popping up lately. They go in the morning and return in the evening, sharing delicious meals, getting guidance on taking medications that are often hard to track, and receiving help with hospital visits. It’s a great thing for everyone involved. 🙂

As the issue of an aging society emerges globally, various solutions are being introduced. Today, I want to show you cases solved through robots.

Q. Hello, Brian! First, could you introduce us to the dementia prevention robot, Silbot?

It’s been a while, Pengbok. As you just mentioned, Silbot is a cognitive training-type care robot that helps activate brain functions and prevent dementia by providing brain-enhancing content to senior citizens.

Q. I heard that many people are looking for these kinds of senior welfare robots lately. Is that true?

That’s right. As we face an aging society in earnest, the demand for these robots is surging. In particular, senior welfare centers are looking for them quite a bit!

Q. I see. 👀 I heard that Suwon City is operating the nation's first smart robot classroom for dementia prevention...

I also heard that Silbot is working incredibly hard at that site. The brain exercise health classes conducted in Suwon open twice every three months, with 60-minute classes held twice a week. 

Any Suwon citizen aged 55 or older can participate. I have an acquaintance living in Suwon, so I should recommend it. 😊

Q. Looking at the class scenes, it’s conducted in connection with smart pads. I heard seniors even find it hard to order via kiosks at unmanned stores these days. Will they be able to adapt well? 😢

I was worried about that too, but it turns out many people actually like it more. They say they can't get their brains moving when they are at home, but by taking classes with the robot, they think about "why they got it wrong" when they miss a question. They also feel a sense of thrill when they get a question right! According to the instructors, they do find it very difficult at first, but over time, they adapt quickly and master the attitude of learning.

Q. That’s great to hear. I found out that besides quizzes and classes, you can also experience Silbot's singing class?

Of course! Exciting songs can't be missing wherever seniors are gathered. Watching them clap and sing along makes me feel naturally excited too. 🎵

Q. Could you introduce other ways Silbot can be utilized? I heard it has many advantages and is a very smart robot...

Correct. First, through the camera attached to Silbot, it can perform face recognition, interaction, and position estimation. It's really cute because it can express over 300 emotions during interactions. Also, during position estimation, it can move accurately through sensors that perform obstacle avoidance and create driving maps.

Q. I see! Then how is the dementia prevention education service structured?

Flexible class configurations are possible for general seniors or those with mild cognitive impairment. Also, through the app, you can conduct simple MMSE* or SGDS* tests to adjust the difficulty level according to the participant's learning level! The difficulty varies by content but goes up to 7 levels, so it’s quite systematic, right?

 *MMSE: Mini-Mental State Inspection The Mini-Mental State Examination, or 'Simplified Dementia Inspection,' is a 30-point questionnaire widely used in clinical and Research settings to measure cognitive impairment and is commonly used in psychiatry and mental health for dementia Inspection.

 *SGDS: Short Geriatric Depression Inspection

Q. Since they can learn by difficulty level, I think they’ll feel a sense of achievement when moving to the next level. 😉 Besides Silbot, I heard Robocare has other robots prepared for seniors?

In addition to Silbot, 'Bomi 1' and 'Bomi 2' are available. Both are care robots for improving the brain functions of the elderly and those at risk of dementia.

First, the most prominent advantage of Bomi 1 is that it is 'tabletop-style.' While it's interesting to have a robot move around like Silbot, this one can be used more conveniently by placing it on a desk. It's particularly attractive because it supports a user interface (UI) that even non-experts can use easily and provides various language functions.

Also, since seniors need large screens and text, there are no worries as it can be viewed on a wide 13.1-inch screen. 😎

Q. Then I’m even more looking forward to the functions of Bomi 2. Has it been upgraded with new features different from Bomi 1?!

Bomi 2 provides various services and cognitive training functions for dementia prevention, similar to Silbot and Bomi 1. The difference is that it is a 'Daily Care Support Robot.'

It provides emergency call services and medication notification functions in the actual daily lives of seniors. 

Since it allows for monitoring the activity of seniors and provides emergency notification services to acquaintances, police, or 119 in case of emergencies, many people are receiving consultations for it.
