Robot Teaching: Want to Apply Process Automation Quickly?

Is robot teaching really necessary?

Are you considering process automation? Automation has become a core technology for increasing productivity and improving quality across various industries. However, did you know that accurate robot teaching is essential for a robot to operate correctly and perform processes smoothly? πŸ€”

What is robot teaching? It refers to the process of programming parameters such as the robot's working path, sequence of operations, speed, and force so that it can perform the target task. This is a critical stage for ensuring precision and efficiency, and it can be a particularly difficult challenge for companies introducing robots for the first time. 😰

Many robot dealers or solution providers often stop at just delivering the robot. Marosol provides an integrated service that goes beyond simple delivery to take full responsibility for installation, teaching education, and after-sales management. In particular, through Marosol's unique ‘Easy Care’ service, we assign a dedicated robot expert to provide close consulting and teaching support.

The ‘Easy Care’ service is highly rated as a differentiated support method that ensures successful automation, providing significant help to customers unfamiliar with robot operation. πŸ‘

Learning to use a robot requires not just theoretical knowledge but extensive practical experience. Marosol’s comprehensive support helps customers adapt quickly, from initial introduction to stable operation.

Today, we will look at a recent case involving nut insertion automation, from installation to robot teaching support, through an interview with Marosol’s robot expert, Hyochun. πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡

Q1. Hello, Hyochun. What was the overall purpose and goal of this project? The company that requested this automation is a machinery manufacturer called Philipper. The main purpose was to automate the nut insertion process within the processing machine to solve problems arising from manual labor and maximize productivity. We focused on reducing fatigue and quality deviation from repetitive tasks while improving overall process speed.

Q2. What is the role of the robot in this project? The robot performs the task of transferring nuts supplied from a nut feeder to the processing machine and precisely inserting them into the product holes. This required precise position control and speed adjustment, and each robot was integrated with the processing machine to perform synchronized tasks.

Q3. What was the process for robot teaching? Robot teaching was conducted at two sites: the office and the field.

  • Office Stage:

    • Designed the work sequence based on the line drawings provided by the customer.

    • Created an IO list between the robot and PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) and finalized it after consultation.

    • Utilized Robot OLP (Offline Programming) to simulate work paths and verify programs.

  • Field Stage:

    • Configured the working environment by establishing communication between the robot and PLC.

    • Uploaded the pre-written programs to the field robots and performed teaching for each process.

    • Optimized work sequences and IO mapping in real-time based on customer requests.

    • Performed automatic operation tests to verify the entire process.

Q4. Why was the project completed faster than expected? We conducted thorough preparations before the introduction. By finalizing the work sequence and IO list early on, we could start field work immediately without additional discussions. Utilizing Robot OLP also allowed us to apply pre-written programs directly. As a result, we reduced the expected teaching period from 14 days to just 6 days.

Q5. How many robots were involved in this teaching task? A total of 6 robots were deployed in this project.

  • 4 Hyundai Robotics HH020 units: Used for high-speed tasks, picking nuts from the feeder and inserting them into holes.

  • 2 Doosan Robotics H2017 units: Used for handling relatively heavy or large nuts and collaborating with the processing machine.

Q6. What is the sequence of this nut insertion automation?

  1. Nut Feeder Operation: Aligns various nuts and supplies them in a direction easy for the robot to grab using a sensor-based alignment system.

  2. Robot Nut Pickup: The robot picks up the nut using high-precision grippers and exact position control.

  3. Transfer to Processing Machine: Moves the nut to the machine while verifying position and orientation in real-time via multi-sensor feedback.

  4. Nut Insertion and Assembly: Inserts the nut into the designated hole using precise force control to prevent damage. Sensors verify correct insertion immediately.

Q7. Is it difficult for a staff member to manage this automated process? The system is intuitive and systematic, making it easy to manage. Marosol optimizes work paths during the teaching stage and provides programs that are easy to maintain. We designed it so that staff can respond to updates with simple guidelines, allowing them to adapt quickly.
